Lamentations of Jeremiah

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 235, is Lamentations 3-5: In this third lament, the acrostic starts three successive verses with each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The fourth lament reports the suffering of the people of Jerusalem during the final days of the Babylonian siege. The final lament is the only one that does not follow the acrostic format. This poem describes the plight of Judah, overrun by invaders and oppressed by her conquerors.

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 234, is Lamentations 1-2: The first lament focuses on Zion, personified as a grieving widow. This second lament focuses on the great suffering inflicted on Zion when Yahweh became like an enemy. Chapters 1-4 follow an acrostic pattern.
