Day 218: Jeremiah 9-11

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 218, is Jeremiah 9-11: Jeremiah is sometimes known as the “weeping prophet,” in part because of his lamenting in chapter 9: “I would weep day and night.” Never popular, Jeremiah even faces death threats and blackmail.

Day 217: Jeremiah 6-8

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 217, is Jeremiah 6-8: Jeremiah calls for the tribe of Benjamin to flee, followed by his Temple sermon: “Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you?” Jeremiah 8:22 is also the source of the spiritual “Balm in Gilead.”

Day 214: Isaiah 64-66

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 214, is Isaiah 64-66: God recounts his faithfulness to Israel, and Israel’s unfaithful response. St. Paul draws on this section in the Epistle to the Romans to advocate for salvation for the Gentiles.

Day 213: Isaiah 60-63

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 213, is Isaiah 60-63: The glory of Zion is expressed in Israel becoming a nation of priests. Chapter 61 (“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor”) is the text for the first sermon of Jesus in Luke 4:18.
