Day 180: Psalm 141-150

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 180, is Psalms 141-150:  The psalter ends with an orchestral finale: Psalm 150, a corporate psalm of praise. “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Hallelujah!”

Day 179: Psalm 134-140

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 179, is Psalms 134-140:  “For his mercy endures forever” is the refrain of Psalm 136: the cause of every event is God’s mercy, which endures forever. Even when, as in Psalm 137, “By the waters of Babylon, we sat down and wept.”

Day 178: Psalm 120-133

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 178, is Psalms 120-133: Fourteen brief psalms of pilgrimage, including some favorites: “I lift up my eyes to the hills; from where is my help to come? My help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth” (120).

Day 177: Psalm 119

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 177, is Psalm 119:  Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible (176 verses). It is an elaborate alphabetical psalm with 22 eight-verse stanzas that extol the Word of God.

Day 176: Psalms 112-118

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 176, is Psalms 112-118: Psalm 112 is an alphabetical acrostic, in which each line begins with a successive letter in the Hebrew alphabet. These psalms are almost all hymns of praise.

Day 175: Psalms 107-111

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 175, is Psalms 107-111: Psalm 107 begins Book 5 of the psalter, the final section. Psalm 110 is a messianic psalm, referring forward to Jesus, and is quoted in the New Testament more than any other verse in the Old Testament.

Day 174: Psalms 104-106

Day 173: Psalms 95-103

Day 171: Psalms 81-88

The reading for Year of the Bible, Day 171, is Psalms 81-88: A diverse set of psalms: some from Asaph, some from David, others anonymous; some laments, others celebrations, moralism, or historical, or all three together. Ends with the mournful, “Darkness is my only companion.”
