Sunday School

Overview of Sunday School at St. George’s

St. George’s has a strong commitment to Christian Education and is blessed with a growing number of children. Currently sixty children are enrolled in grades preschool through high school. St. George's Sunday School teachers continue to guide the children and youth of our parish through their life in Christ. Sunday School classes are held weekly during the 10:00 service from September to June, with class composition determined by children's ages and grade levels so that content is developmentally appropriate to each group.

Children in grades preschool to four attend the service from the procession until the Gloria, then leave the service with their teachers to attend Sunday School. Following their lessons, the children return to the service to receive communion or a blessing. Students in grade five and up attend Sunday School from the sermon until the Peace. The timing of the Sunday School program during the service allows for many of our children and youth to participate in the liturgy as acolytes or choir members.

Pre-School – Grade One: The Episcopal Children's Curriculum is used with this age group. The curriculum seeks to support and strengthen the ministry of teaching in the Episcopal Church, and includes lessons related to the Old and New Testaments, the Sacraments, and the Church. The preschool/kindergarten level (Stories) focuses on stories about key people in the Bible, stories of experience with the sacraments, and stories about the early Church. In addition, the teachers engage the children in creative projects to enhance their learning.

Grades Two – Four: Children in this class also attend Sunday School from the Gloria until the Peace. The Living the Good News Curriculum is used for this age group. This lectionary-based curriculum is designed to make meaningful connections to the day's lessons and Gospel. Games and other cooperative learning activities are used to promote understanding of the lessons and build relationships between the students in this class.

Grades Five – Seven: Using The Episcopal Children's Curriculum, this class provides the foundation for students who are nearing preparation for confirmation, typically in eighth grade.

Grades Eight – High School: Taught by St. George's youth minister, lessons focus on relating the day's lectionary to the challenges in the lives of our youth. A variety of curriculum resources are used for this group, most of whom are preparing for confirmation or who have been confirmed.

Youth Group: The Youth Group is also an integral part of Christian Education at St. George’s. The youth group, for youngsters in grades six through twelve, meets late on Sunday afternoons twice a month throughout the school year. In addition to fellowship, music, games, and outreach projects, Bible Study is generally part of each youth group meeting. Under the guidance of the youth group leaders, the youth group develops and leads the parish in a youth service each year.
